Sisters of St. Joseph's Congregation (SJC)

Sisters of St. Joseph's Congregation in the Archdiocese of Kottayam was founded on July 3, 1928 by the Servant of God Thomas Poothathil, a zealous priest and a man of vision, with the aim of proclaiming Jesus of the Gospels through prayer and various apostolic activities. The motto of our Congregation is "Love and Serve". Special apostolate is to care for the physically and mentally disabled, and thereby bear witness to the merciful love of Jesus. This charism is accomplished by the members of our congregation by doing pastoral, educational, social, charitable, apostolic and missionary activities all over India and even outside India. At present we have 58 Convents and 373 Professed Sisters. We give special services by establishing and managing home and school for the mentally challenged children, rehabilitation centre for the physically disabled, hospice for terminally ill cancer patients, care and support centre for HIV/AIDS patients, hospitals, schools, boarding houses, tailoring centers, hostels, home for the aged, dispensaries, etc. Their congregation renders its services mainly in the rural areas of Kerala. In 1981 the first convent outside Kerala was established in the mission diocese of Rajkot. Later on it extended its mission work to Ujjain, Bangalore, and New Delhi. We also work at Germany, Italy, Switzerland and USA.
